George Washington ESOL & SPED Activity Set

This George Washington reading and lesson set features a 1-page biography of George Washington and 5 different resources to pair with it!

The biography of George Washington is written in very simple English and designed for early ESOL classes or SPED students.I first used this with classes of 9th & 10th grade ELL students very successfully. These students were mostly Level 1 and 2 students who had only been in the US for a year or less. This was a great way to introduce them to our Founding Father!
This resource would also be an excellent activity for SPED students who are struggling readers. The activities include:
  • A timeline for students to complete based on the reading
  • A cut & paste interactive notebook-style graphic organizer on Washington’s life
  • The same graphic organizer on Washington’s life, but without cutting or pasting
  • A worksheet of 7 questions based on the reading
  • A vocabulary page for students to use with words from the reading

A teacher directions page is also included along with answer keys for the timeline and worksheet. Pictures of a completed graphic organizer are included as well to help students visualize what it should look like when they are finished.
These activities are definitely engaging and will help students learn about our first president while working on their reading and writing skills. Check out the preview here for a closer look at each page from the download!

Propaganda from North Korea and the Korean War Activity

This amazing activity on the Korean War utilizes incredibly hard-to-find documents from a rare North Korean museum guidebook to analyze the Korean War from North Korea’s viewpoint!
These images and documents give a fascinating insight into the hyper-propagandistic perspective of North Korea and why the current regime is so antagonistic toward the United States.
With the current tension over Kim Jong-un’s threats and missile tests, this is a wonderful resource for you to use in your classes!
Included in this one download are:
  • A 2 page worksheet for students to use
  • One page of directions and suggested lesson extension activities
  • 20 pages of documents from the “Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum” in Pyongyang, North Korea (DPRK)!

The “Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum” in Pyongyang is entirely dedicated to showing how North Korea "humiliated" the United States in a crushing defeat. It covers over 500,000 square feet, with 18 halls of 80 showrooms all on the “Fatherland Liberation War”.
This is a rare opportunity to get a glimpse of an entirely different perspective of US or World History and a truly a fascinating lesson. The activities can be adapted for AP or IB classes down through traditional middle school students based on the suggested extensions and included resources!

Cold War Primary Source 2-Pack on Nikita Khrushchev

This fantastic primary source 2-pack includes 2 resources related to Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev, both from 1961: a famous speech and a secret telegram about his impressions of John F. Kennedy.

Khrushchev's speech was given at the annual Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. This is an abbreviated excerpt from it that details his views on the competition between capitalism and communism, America as an imperialist, and the plan for disarmament.

The second primary source is a top secret US telegram sent after Khrushchev met with President Kennedy in June 1961. The telegram explains Khrushchev's initial impression of Kennedy and how it changed over the course of their discussions.

Worksheets for both resources with open-ended questions designed to guide your students' understanding of the Cold War. Answer keys for both worksheets are also included for your convenience.

These resources can also be downloaded as part of my Cold War Complete Unit Bundle
